Welcome to Mainline South, a gallery compiled by Richard Stiles. The main aim of this gallery is to record the railway scene across Europe. Most of the scenes that interest me are disappearing, with modernisation sweeping away the old (but interesting) infrastructure. My focus is primarily hauled workings, either freight or passenger. Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB), Rhätische Bahn (RHB), Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn (MGB): Erstfeld, Goeschenen, Chur; September 2008
Switzerland = stunning. The railway from Erstfeld to Goeschennen is remarkable in that is twists, turns and climbs through magnificent scenery before plunging in to the tunnel at Goeschennen and onwards to Italy. For the rail enthusiast, all this is pushed up a notch or two because of the never ending procession of freight and hauled stock. And if you want more variety, then the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn and the Rhatische Bahn narrow gauge lines add to the mix. In summary, it's probably one of the most interesting locations in Europe to watch the railways. The bubble will burst however, when the new base tunnel opens as it will negate the up and over line to Goeschenen, with most traffic diverting beneath this spectacular line. Ho hum...Read More
