Welcome to Mainline South, a gallery compiled by Richard Stiles. The main aim of this gallery is to record the railway scene across Europe. Most of the scenes that interest me are disappearing, with modernisation sweeping away the old (but interesting) infrastructure. My focus is primarily hauled workings, either freight or passenger. A trip to Slovakia between 17th and 21st August 2008. Very lucky with the sunshine, and as for the railways - superb stuff. Highlights were 'Laminatkas' on local stopping passenger trains and diesel haulage with 'goggles'. I visited the main line from Bratislava to Leopoldov, then branching off to Nitra. Next day was Nove Zamky and Surany and the final day was Nove Zamky and Kommaron. Some nonce on Kommaron station took exception to me photographing the railways and started blowing his whistle like a madman, but apart from that no grief at all.Read More
