Welcome to Mainline South, a gallery compiled by Richard Stiles. The main aim of this gallery is to record the railway scene across Europe. Most of the scenes that interest me are disappearing, with modernisation sweeping away the old (but interesting) infrastructure. My focus is primarily hauled workings, either freight or passenger. I hope you enjoy browsing through my photographs.
England: Year of the Bus; Regent Street
Year of the Bus: probably one of the most interesting and commendable events I've ever seen, with full closure of Regent Street and the road filled with a fleet of red or green buses, telling the story from the horse bus right through to today's modern low floor hybrids. By the time I hauled myself down to London, the street was wedged full of people making photography very difficult, but in a way I was pleased that so many people took an interest in something that I've had an interest in since the year dot, the London Bus. Well done TfL for organising such a memorable day. After I left I had a couple of sherberts in a Sam Smiths pub and walked back along Oxford Street. Very lucky for me, as the buses were leaving Regent Street at the same time I was heading home, so I caught some more shots as they passed through Oxford Street. I even managed a shot with an LT, NS, S and K all in the same frame, without doubt the most remarkable vehicle convoy Oxford Street has ever seen.Read More
