Căile Ferate Române: Valea Lui Mihai, Jibou, Baia Mare, Cluj, Raziboieni, Targu Mures; April 2012 : A first visit to Romania with Neil Caplan. Flew to Ferihegy with Wizz Air (good carrier) and stayed in Debrecen on the first night. Next day we took the 09.12 Debrecen to Satu Mare as far as Carei, then on to Jibou for a spot of Sulzer hunting and finishing the day in Baia Mare. Next day I took the afternoon train to Cluj, and the last night was spent in Targu Mures. The best line for sulzers was the Targu Mures line, as Jibou now seems to have lost nearly all sulzers to karts. Certainly an interesting country to visit, but it is a poor country and it was depressing to see so much litter (plastic) dumped in the countryside and rivers. However, any remaining hauled workings by Sulzer 60s/62s are without a doubt worth tracking down.

České Dráhy (ČD): Brno; September 2009 : A trip to Brno flying with RyanAir from Stansted. Enjoyable jaunt with Mr Bearton, Mr Bates and also met up with Mr Denton. Particularly good to see the elderly Class 141 electrics between Olomouc and Nezamyslice plus 749s working between Olomouc and Unicov.

Furthermore, some of the freight workings have since been lost to road haulage and the unusual Cravens stock has been withdrawn.

Deutsche Bahn: Mühldorf, Ulm, München; February 2008 : A short stay in the Inter City Hotel, Ulm. The room overlooked the hauptbahnhof, and from an enthusiast's point of view it's more or less perfect. Ulm itself has a fascinating station, and reminded me of the railway scene lost from England. The variety of stock ranged from DMUs, to hauled stoppers, hauled IC's and top link ICEs. It was busy with freight, and has a depot, therefore a station pilot and several yard pilots were busy throughout the day. The hauled RB workings were of particular interest and included 110s on two coaches and 111s with four coaches to Ingoldstadt. Further variety was added with 218s working to Friedrichshafen or Hergatz. A superb trip with magnificent Winter light. As at 2012 however, the scene is changing with [attrocious] plastic MuthaFugga units taking over from the 111s on the Munchen~Ulm REs, and 218s to Hergatz on the 'endangered' list...The 110s no longer operate out of Munchen either, and the 217s/225s/232s from Muhldorf replaced by [zero interest] Euro-Sheds.

Deutsche Bahn: Gäubahn, Stuttgart, Friedrichshafen, Frankfurt, Kirch Gons, Fronhausen; May/Jun 2012 : 110 and 115 chasing in Stuttgart (Backnang~Marbach, Stuttgart~Tubingen peak only and the Gaubahn on Swiss ICs). Then up to Frankfurt to track down the few remaining 110 workings around Giessen, Treysa, Dillenburg and Frankfurt. As usual, the diagrams from European Rail Gen (Yahoo Group) were absolutely invaluable so ongoing thanks to the people that post the gen. The rarity and biggest surprise was an advert liveried 111 hauling an OBB IC between Ulm and Stuttgart, then returning to Ulm later on a DB IC. The minor disappointment was the non appearance of a 103 on the Fridays only Ulm~Stuttgart, presumably since the regular loco has gone for overhaul standard stock are powering the train.

Deutsche Bahn; Berlin January 2013 : Kolumnas on the Ostbahn; due to the closure of the mainline through Frankfurt Oder, EC trains were diverted through Lichtenberg to Kostryzn, and diesel hauled by Kolumnas from Deutsche Bahn or MEG (Mitteldeutschen Eisenbahn GmbH). Very cold, and the snow started to fall, but a very enjoyable trip with Mr Caplan. Also visited the superb tram-line from Strausberg to Lustgarten.

Deutsche Banh: Düsseldorf, Köln, Wuppertal, Rheinbraun; Mar13 : A jaunt to the Nordrhein Westfalen area, staying in Düsseldorf with Messrs Bates & Bearton. Spent two hours sitting at the side of the Rheinbraun with no movement except for a track machine, then the line suddenly became busy. Also managed to see a handful of the last remaining 110s still left in passenger service. A highlight were the two ECS moves which pass west of Hamm on Wednesday afternoon only. Liebe Köln.

Magyar Államvasutak Zrt.(MÁV): Szombathely and Tapolca; August 2011 : A week long trip to Szombathely for two nights and then on to Tapolca to sample M62 hauled Summer extras on the Tapolca~Balaton~Budapest Deli services. I preferred the Gyor ~ Celldomolk line to the Balaton line, as the light was perfect for most southbound workings, being a north~south line. The east~west Balaton line has many tight curves, so it was difficult to find locations where the sun angle was 'just right'. That said, an M62 on a passenger train does look effing superb.

Polskie Koleje Państwowe SA (PKP): Poznan; May 2011 (includes Deutsche Bahn, Berlin) : A trip to Berlin, Poznan and back to Berlin from 8~15 May 2011. It was the first time I had stayed in Poland, and watching AL3s hauling stock, together with ET22s on passenger, certainly made it a good trip. We also visited the Zybasn~Wolsztyn~Leszno steam hauled line, which was absolutely magnificent and I would recommend to anyone. Kryz still seemed to have loco hauled workings to Pila (SM34 or SP32), but all hauled stock on local trains to Kostrzyn have ended.

Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB), Rhätische Bahn (RHB), Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn (MGB): Erstfeld, Goeschenen, Chur; September 2008 : Switzerland = stunning. The railway from Erstfeld to Goeschennen is remarkable in that is twists, turns and climbs through magnificent scenery before plunging in to the tunnel at Goeschennen and onwards to Italy. For the rail enthusiast, all this is pushed up a notch or two because of the never ending procession of freight and hauled stock. And if you want more variety, then the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn and the Rhatische Bahn narrow gauge lines add to the mix. In summary, it's probably one of the most interesting locations in Europe to watch the railways. The bubble will burst however, when the new base tunnel opens as it will negate the up and over line to Goeschenen, with most traffic diverting beneath this spectacular line. Ho hum...

Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Belges (SNCB); Bruxelles, Leuven, Wetteren - October 2011 : A short visit to Belgium to see the peak hour Class 23 and 26 hauled workings before they are replaced by new Class 18 locos. We struck lucky seeing three freights hauled by class 26s, two of which passed through Wetteren within 45 minutes of each other (12.15 loaded steel east and 12.50 empty steel west). The trip was rounded off by a visit to Charleroi AT open day, and a massive thank you to SNCB staff for organising it. Also helped considerably by comments on Freightmaster - thank you to members that helped (considerably) with planning.

Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF): Tours, Orleans and Vierzon; April 2010 : A trip to Tours in the Loire region, south west of Paris. Tours itself is a beautiful place, as are the towns in the Loire valley, such as Blois or Amboise. Due to a strike, the services were basically screwed for most of my visit, so working out what was running and when was nigh on impossible. The aim of the trip was to see BB9200 'Jacquemins' which didn't have long to go, ending in December 2010. RIP, they have now all gone :-(

The diesels take over from Amiens, for any workings that carry on to Boulogne. There are some hauled diesel workings between Amiens ~ Creil and Amiens ~ Albert.

Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF): Paris, Creil, Soissons; January 2012 : Vive la belle France! A two night stay in Paris, and really delighted to see BB16000 still in service on Mauberge and Amiens trains to Gare du Nord. Also BB17000 working ECS and local trains. The main reason for visiting was to see BB67400s on the Beauvais ~ Creil line, although unfortunately for me the line was closed during the day for engineering works. It actually worked in my favour, as I diverted via Soissons in the morning for some BB67400 haulage (08.30 Paris~Laon & 11.26 Laon~Paris return). In the evening I spent a couple of hours getting night shots on the Beauvais ~ Creil line. Came home the next night, after spending a day knocking round Paris.

Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF): Chambery, Lancey, Gieres, Clermont Ferrand, Issoire; February 2012 : A week long excursion to track down Chambery's BB67300s and Clermont Ferrand's BB67400s. Lucky with the sun for part of the trip, and the fresh mountain air in the Alpes was much appreciated. Always a pleasure to be in France. The only down side for me, was the the last Jacquemins (BB25200) had already ceased operations, so I didn't get the opportunity to see one in action. A major up side however, was being allowed to wander round Chambery depot. Vive la belle France, c'est magnifique la.

Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF): Paris, Steinbourg, Strasbourg, Benfeld, SBB Pratteln; September 2012 : A visit to Steinbourg to photograph SNCF BB25500s on the Saverne~Strasbourg~Selestat corridor. Anything else was a bonus, and the heavy freight flow and Alsace REs were that bonus. Because of the TGV Est high speed line works under construction, the line will change dramatically in future, it's well worth a visit. Oh, and for an example of what 'real' trains are all about, the comfort in the Strasbourg~Basel trains is second to none, hauled stock with plenty of seats.

J'ai prene la dernier journee 16.37 Paris Nord de Mauberge a la 24Nov12, mais quand j'arrive a Aulnoye sur Amyiere j'ai dit au revoir de la train et BB16029 qui partir dans la nuit. Et ce le fin du'n autre locomotive de la SNCF fantasque. Merci pour les memoires belles. Pour moi la jour n'est pas finis, parce qu'il n'ya pas un train qui retour de Paris Gare du Nord! Pourquoi a 6.30pm!! Rien! Eventuallement j'ai payee pour un taxi de Lille et retour par TGV. C'est incredible.

Slovenske železnice (SŽ), Hrvatske željeznice (HŽ), Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB): Slovenia, Croatia and Austria; September 2010 : A trip from Stansted~Graz with RyanAir, and on to Maribor (Slovenia), Karlovac (Croatia) and Lasko (Slovenia). Slovenia, and in particular Ljublujana must rank as one of the most beautiful and unspoilt places in Europe. Sitting drinking a beer, and watching bats fly up and down the river in Lasko and Ljublujana is something special. The river at Lasko was beautifully clear, and full of fish. By the way, the railways are interesting too... :-)

Železničná Spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK): Bratislava, Slovakia; August 2008 : A trip to Slovakia between 17th and 21st August 2008. Very lucky with the sunshine, and as for the railways - superb stuff. Highlights were 'Laminatkas' on local stopping passenger trains and diesel haulage with 'goggles'. I visited the main line from Bratislava to Leopoldov, then branching off to Nitra. Next day was Nove Zamky and Surany and the final day was Nove Zamky and Kommaron. Some nonce on Kommaron station took exception to me photographing the railways and started blowing his whistle like a madman, but apart from that no grief at all.

European LKW : Gallery containing images of miscellaneous HGVs seen on my travels in Europe. Some rare birds include IFAs and Liaz. Tatras are relatively common in Czech Republic and Slovakia, but not at all common outside these countries. The rarest vehicle included (to my mind) is a Jelcz water carrier, seen in Poland in May11.

England: Epping Ongar Railway; 27May12 : Well done to the Epping Ongar Railway, which held its first gala event over the weekend of 25~27 May 2012. Well worth visiting, and the option of steam or diesel hauled trains is a nice touch. For me personally, a class 31 powering up the incline towards Epping gets my vote, especially a 31/4. Blessed by absolutely superb weather, the event must rank as a success. Here's to the future.

England: Ribble Steam Railway; 7Oct12 : After having visited the 5th Annual Penwortham Beer Festival the night before, a quick trip was made to check out the Diesel Gala. The sun shone, and the traction on this short line was surprisingly varied. All workings were top and tailed, with one of the locos being swopped over. At one point, the track runs parallel to the new Preston Guild Wheel, a 21 mile "greenway" that encircles Preston. More details can be found here; http://www.ribblesteam.org.uk/

England: Sir William and Lady Judy McAlpine's Garden Railway; 1Sep12 : A visit to the summer fete at Sir William McAlpine's private railway on 1Sep12. The highlight for me was seeing a massive stone structure rescued from the now demolished Broad Street station. There are hundreds of railway artifacts dotted around, including railway boundary markers from long gone companies such as Lancashire & Yorkshire, London North Western and Metropolitan. Within the grounds are hundreds of wild animals include deer and wallabies. A wonderful place to visit. Welcome to Mainline South. Over time I intend to upload my favourite railway photographs to this gallery. My main interest is European railways, because they still retain a lot of the features lost from the English railway scene. When was the last time you saw a loco released from the blocks at Euston? I grew up in London in the 80s and the scenes long gone from the London terminii are what I enjoy tracking down in Europe.
